Grocery Shopping Plan October 29th : $100 per week budget

I try to keep my grocery budget to around $100 per week for my family of 9.  We have 7 kids, 5 of which are teenagers.  We live on a very tight budget so stretching my bucks at the grocery store is a must!  I do try to keep things on hand for them to snack on including boiled eggs, apples, bananas, or oranges, cheese blocks or sticks, crackers, peanut butter, popcorn, tortillas with refried beans, and I try to keep a homemade sweet in the cake holder.

I'm excited about adding chicken corn chowder to the menu this week.  I make this often in the winter months but haven't made it all summer.   About half of my family really likes soup!  What do the others do when we have something they don't like?  They eat leftovers or fix a PBJ.  I'm not a short order cook but I don't mind if they find an alternative.  They just have to be the ones to make it.

Salisbury Steak with mashed potatoes and brown gravy was requested from Brandi.  She loves brown gravy over anything.  Looks hearty and filling and we haven't had it in a very long time either.

The lime chicken was inspired by both items being on sale this week along with the tortillas and salsa.  So yum!

I will be posting the full menu with the recipes on Sunday.  You can get a sneak peek at the recipes by following my menu planning board on Pinterest.

On leaving a Legacy: Happy Birthday in Heaven Granny Pauline!

Today my granny Pauline would have been 92, instead she is spending her first birthday in heaven with Jesus and all of her loved ones that passed before her.  My granny lived with dementia for a few years before passing away in January.  What a terrible, terrible disease for the one who is suffering from it and loved ones who are suffering in a different way.  Watching someone you love with all your heart, change and diminish right before your eyes is a very hard thing to endure.  I know my granny is happy, healthy, and back to her loving life ways in heaven where she now has life in abundance.

My granny Pauline loved me so much and she showed it every day of her life.  But that's how she loved everyone.  She made everyone feel special, feel loved unconditionally, and you wanted to just stay a little longer with her every time you were around her.  And she wanted you to stay.  She'd make every excuse in the world for you to not go home~ she had dinner cooking, she'd pour you another cup of sweet tea, stay just a little longer and she'd whip up an entire pie plate of biscuits for you to take home.  Hospitality at it's finest in the smallest kitchen in the world.

Granny also was my first teacher.  She didn't use books but she told me stories.  She sang and recited every nursery rhyme known to man while we were going to sleep.  She's the one who told me about Little Bo Peep and Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater.  She also told stories from her childhood, some were so fantastic that you had to wonder if they were true.  Turns out, they mostly were.  I know that granny Futch won the Lawtey spelling bee by spelling "Perpendicular".  And that her dad was leaving to join the army when the church bells rang that peace had been won.  I know that she spent days in the fields picking strawberries as a child when not playing hide and seek with her cousins and her nephews that were her age.  As a granny she took me to pick strawberries too.  She didn't seem to mind that for every one I put into the basket, two more were already in my mouth.

Granny knew how to make the ordinary special.  She didn't have much money and she would carefully plan a weekend cooking menu when family was in from town.  On more than a few occasions I saw her chatting it up with the butcher so she could get her meat cut exactly the way she wanted it and maybe for a discount.  She made bread and butter sandwiches seem like gourmet meals when she cut off the crust and her ordinary pancakes melted in my mouth because she made them bite-sized.  Even a day at the lake was a special occasion when she picked up thick rind cheddar cheese and fresh cut bologna for a picnic in the grass.

When I go to heaven one day, I fully expect to see her running my way, welcoming me home, and asking me to stay at the feet of Jesus with her for just a little while longer.  She will have even more stories to tell me, for her memory will be perfect, and her laugh will echo throughout the heavens.

I am so thankful that God allowed her to be my granny.  For I truly was the most blessed child to have such a wonderful example of hospitality, love, compassion, and understanding of what is truly important during these numbered days on Earth.

Your love never fails, never gives up
Never runs out on me

Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant in the trial and the change
One thing remains

On and on and on and on it goes
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul
And I never, ever, have to be afraid
One thing remains

Your love never fails, never gives up
Never runs out on me

In death, in life
I'm confident and covered by the power of Your great love
My debt is paid
There's nothing that can separate my heart from Your great love

On leaving a legacy: Happy Birthday in heaven Granny Pearce

Today is my dear Granny Pearce's first birthday in heaven.  She would have been 75 years old today.  She left this world in January and I miss her so much. I wish I could tell her how much I loved  her and how appreciative of everything she taught me.  I told her I loved her the last time I spoke to her on the phone and now I wish I had stayed and lingered on that phone call a little longer.  Yesterday I was thinking about her and trying to remember what her voice sounded like.  I scrolled though my voice mails and found the one from her.

"Angie, this is granny.  Give me a call please."  Oh, how I wish I could!!!

I take great comfort knowing that she is with her Savior in heaven rejoicing in her perfect body.  Going through all of her medications, insulin injection kits, and blood test kits made me fully aware of how much pain she was in before she died.  She no longer has pain, only joy.  That makes me smile.

Yesterday I went through some items that I have that were hers.  She didn't leave me rubies and diamonds but the treasure she did leave is far more precious.  She left me her wisdom, her dreams, and her desires for my life.  Honestly, I though my granny invented the frugal lifestyle!  Turns out that she learned it from her mother, who learned from hers how to make the most of every single thing, from a piece of scrap fabric to a bit of leftovers for a casserole.

She never wasted one thing.  She never spent money on junk.  The items in her kitchen are of top quality.  She didn't buy cheap, she bought items that would last.  The clothes that were in her closet didn't number in the hundreds.  But what she had was thoughtful outfits and well made pieces that she could mix and match.  She didn't have tons of shoes.  She had church shoes- tan and black, and she had 3 other pair that she rotated.  When she bought a new pair for wearing to town the next oldest became the around the house shoes, the oldest pair became the outside gardening shoes and the oldest pair were thrown away after the shoe strings had been saved.  She did have a variety of purses and I'm sure each one had a specific purpose or outfit to match for church.  Each purse still had a matching wallet for granny was frugal but she was not cheap!

I have so many precious hand-worked  pieces that she made.   She made quilts and wall coverings, table runners and place mats, she embroidered pillow cases and cloth napkins, and she made doll clothes for the kids.  When I touch those beautiful pieces, I feel like I'm touching her hands.  Time was never spent foolishly for granny, for even when she would sit and watch a movie she was working on something with her hands.

Another thing I realized yesterday is just how much thought she put into the gifts she gave or purchased for us along the years.  Granny didn't give you anything that you asked for, instead she observed your life and determined what blessing you needed.  She didn't just give on birthdays and Christmas either.  You could never expect that she was going to give you somethings but the times she did it was exactly what you needed at the time.

Education was important to my granny.  She told me stories of how she would study her schoolwork after long hours in the garden and finishing her chores when she was still a child and living with her parents.  She never took the easy way out.  She just simply got the job done.  She was an avid reader.  Until diabetes claimed her eyes you could always find granny with a book.  She introduced me to "Gone with the Wind" and we read it together when I was in 9th grade.

She gave books as gifts, she sent educational workbooks in the mail for my kids, and they always had a subscription to Highlight and Baby Bug sent from granny each year.  My daughter Camryn recently began reading the "Biscuit" dog books.  Inside one of them is an inscription from granny that says, "Happy 5th Birthday Camryn. I hope you enjoy learning to read this year.  It will be one of the best things that you ever do."  Every child in my house has a book that says the exact same thing written to them when they turned 5.

But the one thing that I have that I cherish the most from my granny is a legacy of prayer and humbleness before God.  Granny was a prayer warrior and I'm sure she battled Satan himself many times in prayer for me, my family, and her loved ones.  Two things stick out in my mind about granny's prayer life.  She prayed for the salvation of every family member including her brothers and sisters, her children, and her grandchildren.  And she prayed for those who asked her to pray for them.

She had prayed for her bother Jimmy for years.  He and his family began  driving 30 or more minutes to our home church back around 1997.  One morning during the invitation, Uncle Jimmy stood up and walked the aisle, fully trusting in God for his salvation.  At that moment I took my eyes off the alter where he was and looked at my granny.  Tears streamed down her face and she quietly repeated "Thank You Jesus for your faithfulness.  Thank You Jesus for answered prayer".   I don't know how long she had prayed for Uncle Jimmy but I knew that she trusted that God would save those for whom she prayed no matter the circumstances of that person's life, no matter the sins that clouded their sight, no matter what the rest of the world thought.  She knew the giver of life and she knew he would save her loved ones.

On the day of her memorial service in January, my family got up and went to her church for Sunday services.  Granny's memorial was on Sunday and I know she would have loved knowing that she was being remembered on the day of the week set aside to remember and praise our God.  I went into the nursery of the church to drop off Annika.  I was signing her in when the lady in charge introduced herself.  Then she said, "You look familiar.  Have you been here before?"  As I choked back tears I simply responded, "Yes, ma'am.  I'm Voncile and Jack's granddaughter."

Her eyes softened and she hugged my neck.  And then she said, "I am so sorry for your loss but let me tell you that you had a grandmother that prayed for you.  She was one of the greatest prayer warriors I have ever known.  She was in my Sunday School class and we all knew that if we went to Voncile and asked her to pray for a situation that she would pray and not stop praying until we told her that the prayer had been answered.  So many good and wonderful things have happened in each of our lives because of your grandmother's faithfulness."

Yesterday while I was having a crying session over the loss of my granny, the Holy Spirit gave me this song.  It was like granny was singing the words to me over and over straight from her mansion in glory.  My prayer is that I become half the person my granny was to so many people, to the church family, and to the spreading of the gospel.  Nothing else truly matters.  Only the legacy we leave behind and the souls we take with us to heaven.

All I once held dear, built my life upon
All this world reveres, and wars to own
All I once thought gain I have counted loss
Spent and worthless now, compared to this
Knowing you, Jesus
Knowing you, there is no greater thing
You're my all, you're the best
You're my joy, my righteousness
And I love you, Lord
Now my heart's desire is to know you more
To be found in you and known as yours
To possess by faith what I could not earn
All-surpassing gift of righteousness
Oh, to know the power of your risen life
And to know You in Your sufferings
To become like you in your death, my Lord
So with you to live and never die

Menu Plan for the week of October 26th: Eat from the pantry week

There were absolutely no good sales this week at Winn-Dixie or Save A Lot.  So what to do about a menu when you don't have a shopping plan?  Buy the basics and eat mostly from what you already have on hand.

Looking ahead at my week I see that we are going to be very busy!  I'm sure most of you are too since it is the week of Halloween and Fall Festivals at local churches.

Sunday is my annual family reunion.  I will be making a lemon pound cake along with some baked macaroni and cheese.   After the reunion, I'm having a smaller gathering of close family to carve pumpkins and have a bowl of chili.

Monday is Caleb's 15th birthday.  I try to make each child their absolute favorite meal on their birthday.  He is my most picky eater and when asked he says he doesn't have a favorite meal.  Boo!  I decided on grilled hamburgers, tater tots, cucumber slices and chocolate cake.

Tuesday I plan to pull a ham from the freezer.  Along with the ham we will have green beans, mac and cheese, and crescent rolls.

Wednesday we will be walking down to the First Unite Methodist's Pumpkin Patch and having chili and hotdogs with friends there.

Thursday is Trunk or Treat at my home church, Madison Street Baptist.  Our church went with Thursday to avoid clashing with so many other area churches who will be doing activities on Wednesday.  If you are in the area, come by MSBC and join in the fun with free food, free candy, and inflatables for the kids, along with some fantastic trunks for Trunk or Treat!

Friday is Halloween.  Normally I would try to make a silly or scary meal but this year we have a home football game that involves Christin, Brandi, and Caleb.   I will put the ham bone from Tuesday in the crock pot with some dried lima beans and make a pan of cornbread.  This way each person can grab a bowlful and eat when their schedule allows.

Saturday is band marching contest.  Woohoo!  We will be traveling to see the Bradford and Union County Bands perform and I will be taking a cooler full of snacks and drinks.

The only items I see myself actually needing to buy this week are the basics:  bread, milk, fresh fruit.

I encourage you to also look at your schedule, see what you already have and fill in the gaps.  Let's make this a pantry and freezer week and save some money!

Winn-Dixie Deals for October 22-28th

Last week I thought the sales were a little lacking, so this week I think they are down right pitiful.  Looking closely I see a few hidden gems.

Boneless Chuck Roasts are on sale for $3.97 per pound.  If you have the butcher grind them, it turns into ground chuck.  $3.97 per pound is an excellent price for ground chuck right now.

Winn-Dixie brand beans varieties are $.60 per can.  The sale includes kidney, pinto, chili, and great northern.  I see a great soup or chili for my meal plan!

Progresso soups are BOGO for $2.69, or $1.35 each.  When you buy $10 in Progresso items you get Catalina coupon for $1.50 off your next order.  I also found coupons at Publix for $2.00 off 4 Progresso items.  Combing the bogo with the coupon with the Catalina means I can get 16 cans for around $12 bucks.

Apples are once again $.75 per pound for the Michigan Gala or Delicious varieties.  There's also a $.50 reward on the Checkout 51 app and a $.50 reward on the SNAP app.  So buying a 3 pound bag would be a net cost of $1.27 or $.42 per pound.

If you haven't signed up you can join Checkout 51 and SNAP by clicking these links.  You can use both on the same receipt!

Here's the entire printable/editable Winn-Dixie list.  Yes, it is short!

Menu Plan for the Week of October 19th

You can find all of these meals plus a few others on my Pinterest Board Called October Menu Plan.
I invite you to follow me on Pinterest for all things Broke but Rich!

What's cooking this week?  In our house, we are having lots of low-cost meals!

Sunday:  Dinner:  Chicken and Rice
I use my granny's recipe every single time it is gobbled up by every family member.  It is definitely one of the meals that I know I can make cheaply, easily, and will be a hit.  Think you can't make chicken and rice?  It's easy!  I'll show you how on my next post!

From The Girl Who Ate Everything
Monday:  Baked Ziti, Salad, Garlic Bread, Apple crisp
I'm going to be modifying this recipe and going meatless.   Served alongside a hearty salad and garlic bread, I'm hoping my family doesn't miss the meat.

Tuesday:   Hot Turkey and Cheese Sandwiches, Oven Potato Wedges
From Let The Baking Begin Blog

Wednesday:  One Pot Chicken Bake (Chicken, potatoes, carrots) with cornbread muffins
This meal appeals to my comfort food side!  It just looks like a warm, fall dish.  And it couldn't be easier and since it all cooks together there is little mess to clean up before we head out to Awanas.

From Tidymom

Thursday:  Sausage Alfredo with green beans
This one dish wonder comes from Tidymom.  She has delicious food recipes plus crafts, organizing and homemaking advice on her blog.  I like it when I find pasta recipes that don't use red sauces.  Nothing wrong with a red pasta sauce, I just like the change it gives to the pasta when a recipe uses something different.

From Allthecooks
From Kitchme
Friday:  Fried Rice with Pepper Steak
My kids love Fried Rice and pairing it with pepper steak makes my husband happy.

This recipe for Pepper Steak looks easy enough and has great ratings!

Best Meat and Produce Prices October 16th-23rd

There's not a whole lot to get excited about this week, sadly.  Save A Lot and Walmart are your best bets for the lowest prices on produce.  A few good meat deals but make sure you look at the days they are on sale.  Friday only Spires has ground beef for $2.69 per pound and Save A Lot has a 3 day weekend sale going on thru Sunday.

Another frugal option is the reduced table at local produce stands.  I know that at Norman's Market they cull the fruit and vegetables that they need to sell quickly and make $1 grab bags.  This week I got cucumbers for $.25 each (4 in a bag) and tomatoes for $.20 each (5 in a bag).  Best times are around 9-10 am and again in the early afternoons.

Here's this week's list:

Menu Plan: October 12-18th

This is my planned menu for the week, beginning with Sunday dinner.  A few meals will cost a bit more, some will cost a bit less.  Overall  I plan to spend around $150 for all our needs for breakfast, lunch and dinner!  That's for my family of 9, including 5 teenagers.

Rotisserie Roasted Chicken from Taste, Love, & Nourish.

I will be cooking two of these amazing roasted chickens.  I am hoping to have some leftovers to make chicken potpie later in the week. You can get all of the ingredients and instructions over on the site Taste, Love, & Nourish.

On Mondays I almost always use a crockpot meal since I'm usually doing lots of cleaning and straightening after the weekend.  It's also a heavy homeschooling day to set the tone for the week!

Crockpot Ranch Pork chops:

Keyingredient.com

One package of pork chops, 1 can of Cream of Chicken soup, 1 packet dry Ranch dressing mix. In crockpot layer pork chops, add the cream of chicken soup, then sprinkle dry Ranch dressing all over. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours OR Low for 6 hours.

This one makes a gravy by itself that I'll serve over rice.

 Juicy Turkey Burgers:

Blackbirdideas Turkey burger recipe

I'll be making turkey burgers this week since Butterball ground turkey is BOGO at Winn-Dixie.  For my family to eat burgers made from turkey they have to be juicy not dry and full of flavor.  This recipes gets it right for us.  I made these back in July and all but 2 kids liked them.  That's pretty big for this family of sometimes picky eaters.

Ingredients for four burgers:
1 pound ground turkey meat
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 tablespoon Worchestershire
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 small onion or 2 shallots, finely chopped
Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and combine with hands. Then, divide into 4 equal sized patties.  Grill on the George Foreman or in a pan.  Serve with your favorite toppings.

We will be eating Roasted red potatoes with these burgers.  I just wash them, quarter them and toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning.

Dinners for the remaining nights will be:
Spaghetti with meat sauce served with garlic bread and bagged salad
Bird's Eye Voila (Garlic Chicken)
Breakfast for dinner with Aunt Jemima French Toast, Bacon, and baked apples
Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

Christmas on a Tight Budget: Take time to Observe

Before you decided what gifts you will actually write down for all the people you love in your family, in your circle of friends, and gifts for other people's children, take a couple of days and observe and really notice them as an individual.

For me, this means I'm observing my husband, each of my children, my sisters, and a few close friends.  Now this isn't some covert, CIA investigation but rather just a time to really engage with each one and see what floats their boat.  Just because your daughter really liked "One Direction" last summer doesn't mean they are the same group that she listens to 24/7 today.  Likewise, last year your husband may have longed for a certain shiny, electronic item but maybe he has moved on and is focused on a new hobby this year.

Of course, some people are known for their hobbies, standards, and collections of things that they love.  Some people love certain items and we know that about them.  My grandpa loves cashews and I always include a can with his gift.  I have one daughter that loves shiny, stud earrings.  She will get a pair in her stocking.

What's the point of this week of observing?  Hopefully, this year, Christmas gifts will have significant meaning for each of the people we choose to bless with a gift from us.  Something that shows how much we love them and know them and want to bless them.  Not just another a gift card we picked off the spinning rack because it was the last dang minute and we have to be at Aunt Sally's house in an hour!  Not another trinket that will end up in next summer's yard sale.

For my little kids I'm going to try to notice what toys or activities they chose on their own to play with this week.  What items do they keep going back to?  Who's their favorite character?  When they have quiet, alone time what type of books do they choose?  When allowed to watch TV, what shows do they watch?

For my older teens I will try to have conversations about what new trends they like in music and clothes.  I will ask what's the latest songs they've downloaded, I'll look at their viewing history on Netflix and the DVR.  I will ask if there is some place they've been wanting to go and see or go and do.

Here's a worksheet to help you observe your family and loved ones this week.

"It is better to give than to receive."
Let's make this more true this year than ever before when we observe and carefully select gifts on purpose with purpose!
